Adamah stein

La collection "Shmatess"

Shmatess is a Yiddish word (language derived from German and several Slav tongues, used by Eastern European Jews.)From the Polish szmata, “torn fabric”, “rag”, “rubbish”, “Shmatess” evokes the craft of tailor but also second-hand clothes. Many Eastern European Jews (like Debora Stein’s grandfather) were tailors or sold shmatess. This word carries a history linked to identities, memories.Adamah Stein has borrowed this notion for its new collection, to evoke the idea of making visible and precious the remains of our way of life.In the very image of the Yiddish language, which is made of many tongues, Adamah Stein clothes are a patchwork of several currents and imaginations that, in the end, creates a piece of luxury.
